As reported by cafef.vn & offshore-energy.biz on May 8, 2025, U.S. oil and gas corporation Murphy Oil and its partner SK Earthon (a subsidiary of SK Group, South Korea) have announced a new oil discovery at the Lac Da Hong-1X well (Pink Camel), located in Block 15-1/05 offshore Vietnam. This marks the second oil discovery in just three months, following a successful find at the Hai Su Vang (Golden Sea Lion) field (Block 15-2/17) in January 2025. Both blocks are located in the Cuu Long Basin – a region offshore of southern Vietnam with abundant hydrocarbon potential.
According to Murphy Oil, exploration drilling at the Lac Da Hong (Pink Camel) well encountered a 32-meter oil column at a depth of approximately 4,100 meters. The test results indicated a production flow of 2,500 barrels per day of high-quality crude oil with an API gravity of 38°.
Initial estimates suggest that the recoverable oil reserves at this well could range from 30 to 60 million barrels, further affirming the petroleum potential of the Cuu Long Basin through these recent successive discoveries.
| Block 15-1/05 offshore Vietnam is operated by Murphy Oil (U.S.) with a 40% stake. PetroVietnam Exploration Production (PVEP) – the core upstream arm of Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) – holds 35%, while SK Earthon (South Korea) owns the remaining 25%. The three companies are actively evaluating development options, aiming to begin oil production from the Lac Da Vang field (Golden Camel) this year and achieve first oil from Lac Da Hong field (Pink Camel) by the end of the decade. |
